How to Replace a Computer Screen in Premiere Pro

By yojacq • 7 min read • Updated Oct 17, 2026

Commercial video editors frequently need to insert app UI mockups, website demos, or software walkthroughs into shots of laptops, smartphones, and monitors. Learn how to perform 2D perspective screen replacements right on your Premiere Pro timeline without launching After Effects or Mocha.

The 4 Key Elements of a Believable Screen Replacement

A great screen replacement isn't just about sticking a video on top of a monitor. To look photorealistic, you need four ingredients:

  1. Corner Pin Alignment: Aligning the 4 corners of your screen graphic to the 4 physical bezels of the display.
  2. Perspective Motion Tracking: Following camera tilts and pans as the device moves through the frame.
  3. Glass Reflections & Blending Modes: Using Screen or Lighten blend modes, or layering the original glass reflection on top.
  4. Natural Motion Blur: Adding matching shutter angle blur so the screen doesn't look unnaturally sharp when the actor moves the device.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Prep the Footage on Your Timeline

Place your laptop footage on Video Track 1 (V1). Place the screen UI recording or mockup on Video Track 2 (V2) directly above it.

Step 2: Track with Perspective Mode in Premiere

Select the laptop clip on V1. In Effect Controls ➔ Opacity, select the 4-Point Polygon Mask Tool. Drag each of the 4 points to the 4 physical corners of the laptop screen. In the Tracker row, ensure Perspective is checked. Click Track Forward.

Step 3: Convert with Trackr

Open Window ➔ Extensions ➔ Trackr. Select the laptop clip and click "Load Premiere Mask". Next, select your screen graphic on V2 and click "Apply Tracking (Corner Pin / Transform)". Trackr maps the 4 points to the replacement graphic instantly.

Step 4: Composite Reflections & Glow

To make the screen blend naturally: duplicate the original footage clip to Track 3, mask out the screen area, and set its Blend Mode to Screen at 25–40% Opacity. This restores natural room reflections on top of your graphic.

When Is After Effects Still Necessary?

Trackr handles 2D planar and perspective screen replacements with speed and precision. However, you should still switch to After Effects or Mocha if:

For 90% of commercial screen inserts (straight-on or moderate angles), Trackr does the job in 15 seconds directly on your sequence.
